George Washington

In 1797, George Washington decided not to run for a third term and retired to his home at Mount Vernon and took up farming. His presidential successor John Adams, commissioned Washington to be commander-in-chief of the army in 1798 when a possible war with France seemed likely.

In December of 1799, Washington was out inspecting his farm in freezing rain and contracted pneumonia. He passed away on Dec. 14, 1799 and people mourned as news of his death spread throughout the world.
