Galileo published his astronomical observations of his most famous book “The Starry Messenger” was hugely popular throughout Europe – especially in the scientific community. Because of Galileo’s belief in Copernicus’ heliocentric theory, he came under scrutiny of the Catholic Church. He was tried by the church in 1615 and was cleared, but was tried later and convicted of heresy and was sentenced to house arrest.
