Pompeii
After the initial eruption the city of Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of volcanic ash and rock. The volcanic ash kept the city of Pompeii perfectly preserved. The city of Pompeii was lost for centuries - being buried 60 feet underground. It was rediscovered in 1599 when massive digging was being done in the area to redirect river water. |
