Petra was inhabited by the Nabataeans and had the luxury of a natural defense of the city. Visitors to Petra marvel at the gorges and thin passageways that lead to the city creating a type of fortress. These narrow gorges are some of the biggest distinguishing characteristics of Petra. Some of the mini-gorges that have been carved into the sandstone are only 10 feet wide in certain areas.
