There are actually many types of reefs that comprise the Great Barrier Reef. Ribbon Reefs are reefs that look long and narrow and look like a ribbon. Barrier Reefs are a type of reef that grows on the coastline and actually creates a lagoon between the beach and the reef. These reefs provide a barrier form waves hence the name Barrier Reefs.
