Vasco da Gama set sail on his historic mission on July 8, 1497. The expedition left from Lisbon with four ships and a crew of 170 men.

Vascos brother Paulo de Gama commanded one of the ships in the expedition. And the first part of the mission went smoothly as they rounded the Cape of Good Hope on November 22. |
