Marie Curie started analyzing the radioactive mineral Pitchblende, and came to the conclusion that mineral was made up of a radioactive element. The Curies began work on chemically separating Pitchblende.
Marie Curie found that performing the separation of Pitchblende was a tedious undertaking, but her hard work paid off by discovering a new element polonium which she named after her native Poland.
