Gandhi

The Amritsar Massacre occurred when Indians were protesting against British control (Gandhi did not attend this protest) and British troops opened fire on the crowd of 5,000 and an estimated 1000 people died.

The Amritsar Massacre was a catalyst for the movement towards Indian independence and focused Gandhi completely on independence from Britain. In 1930 he organized the Salt March where he led a pilgrimage of nonviolent protestors to the sea to illegally make salt to protest against British salt taxes.
